Team Awards
Every spring, we give out five team awards. What makes these awards so special is that they are voted on my the players in the program. The awards we give out are: Executive Board Member of the Year, Most Improved Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, the Nick Kruml Player of the Year as the Billy Foertsch Warhawk Award. Here is a break down of each award and the recipient for this season.
Our first team award for the 2019-20 season is our Executive Board Member of the Year. This award is given to a team member who has stepped up to be a leader in the program. As a club program, we are required to elect a President, a Vice President, a Secretary, a Treasurer and a Captain or Co-Captains. We also include, on our Exec Board, anyone who serves on the Great Lakes Bowling Conference Exec Board.
This year's recipient has served as the Treasurer for the past three seasons. He is responsible for overseeing our budget, which is in excess of $45,000 each year. He works with our President and the Associate Director for Rec Sports and Facilities to ensure that our entries are paid, hotel authorizations are sent, gas is reimbursed and everything else financial.
Congratulations to Senior Chad Dempski for being named the 2019-20 Executive Board Member of the Year!
Our second team award is the 2019-20 Most Improved Player of the Year. This award goes to the player who has shown the most growth in the physical and/or mental game. This improvement could have been within this particular season, or it could have been from the previous season to this season.
Our recipient this year certainly showed significant improvement from last season (2018-19) to this season (2019-20). Here is a comparison of his stats from last year to this year:
Single Pins: Increased by 8.46%
Multi Pins: Increased by 7.53%
Strike Percentage: Increased by 4.47%
Fill Percentage: Increased by 5.06%
Pocket Percentage: Increased by 5.51%
Average: Increased by 6.67 pins per game
Our recipient also found his way onto the Varsity Team a couple of times this season, including the team that won the Five Seasons Classic bracket!
Congratulations Ty Peterson on being named the 2019-20 Most Improved Player of the Year!
Our next team award is our Rookie of the Year award. This goes to the first year collegiate bowler that has made the most significant impact on the program and that shows a strong potential in the future.
This years recipient made four Varsity appearances this season. Some of his accolades includes an 18th finish at the Midwest Collegiate (Tier 1), bowling in the bracket at the Leatherneck, being a part of the east coast Tier 1 rosters and winning the Lehigh Valley Classic as well as winning the Great Lakes Bowling Conference 4 tournament as an individual for his first All-Tournament Team! He was also named to the Great Lakes Bowling Conference First Team All-Conference and was named the GLBC Rookie of the Year!
Congratulations to Drake Bazzy on being named the 2019-20 Rookie of the Year!
Our next team award is for our Nick Kruml Player of the Year award! This award is named after an alum who is the only person to win this award all four years of his career at UW-Whitewater. This award goes to the player who has made the most significant impact, either on or off the lanes, within the team.
This year's recipient has collected a small collection of hardware this season. He averaged 207.709, which was a 6 pins per game increase over his sophomore year and a 16 pins per game increase over his first year. This player earned All-Tournament Team finishes at: GLBC II (1st), Keystone Quaker which is a Tier 1 (3rd), GLBC III (2nd) and GLBC IV (4th). He also finished 5th in the nation when it came to Average Differential (30.726).
Here is a list of the accolades this player has earned this year:
GLBC First Team All-Conference
Conference Player of the Year
Club First Team All-American
IBMA Collegiate Bowler of the Year Honorable Mention
NCBCA Honorable Mention All-American
Team Player of the Year
Congratulations Brandon Mooney on being the 2019-20 Player of the Year!
Our final team award is the Billy Foertsch Warhawk Award! This award was renamed from the Team Player Award to the Billy Foertsch Warhawk Award in 2017. The team had a hard time deciphering between the Team Leader Award and the Team Player Award. So the award was renamed the Warhawk Award to make it our most prestigious award. It was further named after the first recipient.
This award goes to the team member who truly lives what it means to be a Warhawk! Here is the inscription on the award: "For your dedication to the program, exemplifying everything it means to be a team player, and always exhibiting traits of a quality leader!"
And this year's recipient certainly fits this description. So much so, that he is the first person to receive the award twice! He has been a constant voice for the program, served two years as a Co-Captain, lead by example and truly loved being a Warhawk!
Congratulations David Eggert on being named the 2019-20 Billy Foertsch Warhawk Award recipient!
We would like to congratulate each of our award winners this season, as well as our seniors and those players who are electing to not return to the program next season. While it is always sad to end a season, this one was especially hard with no post season for our seniors to go out with. But as with every door that closes, a new one opens. We will now set our sites on the 2020-21 season and making sure that we are staying #InTheMoment!

Post Season Honors Continue
The Warhawks "brought home" hardware in the post season. Last Wednesday, USBC Collegiate hosted a livestream announcement for the International Bowling Media Association and the National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association All-American Award announcements. This can be viewed by going to their Facebook page.
First up, it was the IBMA announcement. We knew that Junior Brandon Mooney was a finalist as they announced the eight finalists about a week prior to the show. And when the results came out, Brandon was named an IBMA Collegiate Bowler of the Year Honorable Mention. Next up on the results show was the NCBCA All-American's. This year, the NCBCA did expand their Honorable Mention honorees from 5 to 10. And thankfully we didn't need the extra five spots to have two players named as NCBCA Honorable Mention All-American's. Both Junior Brandon Mooney and Senior Ryan Winters were named to the Honorable Mention Team!
This marks the eighth consecutive year that our program has had someone earn an IBMA Collegiate Bowler of the Year finalist award as well as a NCBCA All-American award! We currently have the longest active streak of schools to have a player named an IBMA finalist! And we are currently tied (with Webber International University) for the longest active streak of schools to have a player named a NCBCA All-American! This is something for our program to certainly be proud of! Congratulations to all of our post season award finalists!

Club Post Season Awards
While COVID-19 prevented the Collegiate Club Championships from happening this spring, the Club Teams Bowling Coaches Association still selected post season award winners. BowlTV, the livestreaming platform for USBC, streamed the announcement of the Switch Bowling Club All-American's and the "of the year" awards. You can see a reply of that on their Facebook page.
The Warhawks were well represented during the show. There were a total of six of our team members selected as finalists for All-American's, and Head Coach Shawn Wochner was a finalist for the Randy Widger Men's Club Coach of the Year award.
Junior Brandon Mooney and Senior Ryan Winters were both named as Switch Bowling Club All-American First Team members. This marks the first selection for Brandon while it is the third selection for Ryan. Ryan was a Second Team member in both 2018 and 2019. Shawn also earned his fifth Randy Widger Men's Club Coach of the Year award!
Everyone needs to tune into BowlTV on Wednesday April 15th at 5:00pm central. That evening, Email and Aaron will be announcing the International Bowling Media Association (IBMA) Collegiate Bowler of the Year, Runners Up as well as Honorable Mentions. Then they will also announce the National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association (NCBCA) All-American First Team, Second Team, Rookies and Players of the Year. Also, they will announce the Kerm Helmer Women's Coach of the Year and the Gordon Vadakin Men's Coach of the Year, which Head Coach Shawn Wochner is also a finalist for. Here's to more hardware in a post seasonless season!

Post Season Canceled
For the first time in college bowling history, there will be no post season! Due to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak, the Center for Disease Control and the World Health Organization made the recommendation that there be no gatherings larger than 10 in any one location. This forced the cancelation of both the Sectional qualifier and the ISC/ITC's.
All of the award granting associations are working with USBC to have a livestream show on BowlTV announcing the Club, NAIA, NCAA, IBMA and NCBCA All-American awards. We will also announce our teams award winners in April.
While we feel horrible for all of our Warhawks not being able to compete this post season, all of our student-athletes and coaches will see the lanes again next season with the exception of our five seniors. Check out our Facebook page for daily tributes to our seniors! We love you guys and will miss each of you! Best wishes in your future endeavors. And remember, Once A Warhawk, Always A Warhawk!

Regular Season Ending Event
One of our most favorite regular season tournaments is the Hoosier Classic! This history, the prestige and the tough conditions make it exciting for the team. This year we ventured to Indianapolis for the 51st annual event.
Friday night was the Columbia 300 Sweeper. Several of our guys competed but one reigned supreme, again. For the second year in a row, Andrew Heritage won the eliminator event.
Once the Hoosier Classic got started on Saturday morning (at 7:15am mind you), it was time to focus on the teams success. As stated before, these are extremely challenging patterns and this year was no different. The team struggled to really find their path to the pocket throughout the six team games. At the end of Saturday, the team found themselves in 16th place. The team had a traditional team meeting Saturday night, having the same conversations as each meeting previously this season. Sunday, on a different pattern, we found the same difficulty to get to the pocket. However, the team bowled well enough (especially the last three baker games shooting 660) to climb from 16th to 10th place.
While the team missed the cut to the bracket for the first time in several years, the team left on a positive note and know that when their backs are against the wall, they can fight for each other and for this team. We are excited to see what the post season brings!

Conference CHAMPIONS!
This past weekend was the Great Lakes Bowling Conference fourth tournament of the season, as well as the Conference Championships! With the strongest team of the season (in conference play) assembled, the Warhawks showed up with one mission, to win!
In the GLBC IV event, the Warhawks were successful. Both Varsity and JV came out victorious, and all three UW-W teams finished ahead of all over Varsity teams. The Warhawks also placed three on the All-Tournament Team: Freshman Drake Bazzy took home his first ATT as well as his first ever win in college action. Junior Brandon Mooney was 3rd and Senior Ryan Winters finished 4th.
When it came to All-Conference Awards, once again the Warhawks cleaned up. This year, we took home four spots on the first team, two spots on the second team and both major individual awards. Here is the breakdown:
All-Conference First Team
Brandon Mooney
Drake Bazzy
Ryan Winters
Zach Sasser
All-Conference Second Team
Alec Karr
David Eggert
Conference Player of the Year
Brandon Mooney
Conference Rookie of the Year
Drake Bazzy
Then it was time for the bracket to start. JV 1 made very quick action of UW Milwaukee JV in their best of 5 match, sweeping the first three games. Congratulations to our JV team for winning the Conference JV Championship for the (I believe) 5th consecutive year!
In the Varsity division, the Warhawks (who had the #1 seed) faced off with #8 seed Upper Iowa University in the opening round. While this match was much closer than scores made it out to be, the Warhawks were able to squeak by 2-1 over the Peacocks. In the Semi-Finals, the Warhawks faced off with #4 seed Minnesota State Mankato. Again, the match was close as the Warhawks had to take it to the decisive third game before winning 2-1. The finals because a best of five, and thanks to a late rally in game four, they avoided going to the decisive game five. The Warhawks took both games one and two before falling in game three. In the fourth game, the Warhawks were down roughly 24 pins through six frames. Christian Caban, Alec Karr and Ryan Winters all struck in frames 7th - 9th, setting up Brandon Mooney needed to double in the 10th to clinch the win. And Brandon did not disappoint labeling all three in the 10th frame.
This win brought the Warhawks their 5th Conference Championship in 10 years. Now the team will refocus their efforts as they parepare for the final tournament of the regular season next weekend, the Hoosier Classic.

35th Win in Conference
This weekend marked the 35th win in conference play (Wisconsin Collegiate Bowling Conference / Great Lakes Bowling Conference) in the past 10 years. JV also won their division as well.
The Warhawks placed three on the All-Tournament Team this weekend. Brandon Mooney was 2nd, Ryan Winters was 4th and Alec Karr was 5th. Tyler McNutt finished 6th, just 12 out of the ATT.
The Warhawks will take next weekend off before attending the conference championships in Milwaukee.

Rough Start To Spring
After a couple of weeks off from our East Coast trip, the Warhawks returned to action in the ISBPA/Kegel Midwest Collegiate Classic. This tournament has historically been rough for the team as we are not back in classes prior to the tournament. And this year proved to be more of the same from this tournament.
The team struggled on spares and to get really anything going. Senior Ryan Winters was the lone player to go plus for any number of game, going plus 27 for 5 games. And Sunday found the guys struggling again and averaging only 195 for the 20 baker games.
The Warhawks will now regroup before heading into our final two conference tournaments of the season!

4th Tier 1 Victory!
The Warhawks made their annual trip out East between Christmas and New Years! As usual, the trip started with some sightseeing, this year in Philadelphia. We were able to see Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell and the Philadelphia Museum of Art (aka the Rocky steps) as well as eat some authentic Philadelphia Philly's and had ice cream at the historic Franklin Fountain!
Once bowling got started at the Keystone Quaker Classic, not a lot went our way. Spare shooting over the first two days was certainly a season low. Despite the low moments of the first tournament, we were able to have two players earn All Tournament Team honors, Branon Mooney finished 3rd over all and Donovan Thomas was 5th. This marked Brandon's 4th All Tournament Team finish and Donovan's first as a Warhawk. The team did secure a 4th place finish.
The action then shifted to the Lehigh Valley Classic. While the first day of this tournament stated much like the first two days of bowling, Ryan Winters was an exception to that. He bowled great and earned the 4th spot on the All Tournament Team. The final day of competition saw a team that was much more like the Warhawk Open team! The guys banded together, played the roles they were given and filled their frames. The tournament came all the way down to the 10th frame of the final baker game. Senior Ryan Winters needed a mark of any kind to win it for the Warhawks and he packed 10 back! This gave the Warhawks their 4th Tier 1 win in program history and their 4th win of this season!
The team will now have a couple of weeks off before the Varsity team comes back to campus early for the ISBPA/Kegel Collegiate Classic in Addison, IL January 18th and 19th. All players will return and report to practice on January 21st. Our third conference tournament will be January 25th and 26th in Green Bay, WI!

Warhawks Strike a Victory
The Warhawk Open weekend was once again a huge success for the program. This year, to kick things off, there was a sweeper on Friday evening. 20 of our 23 Warhawks participated. All of the top spots went to members of our program. Congratulations goes out to the following players:
1st - Quinn Sheehy (690)
2nd - Hunter Loveridge (687)
3rd - Nolan Callan (660)
4th - Zakary Geer (650)
5th - Andrew Heritage (637)
Saturday was the start of the Warhawk Open and consisted of 6 traditional style team games. For the varsity team, this was the first day all season that we shot over 1,000 every game. The guys bowled great. They dug deep when they needed to. They struck (a lot) when their lines were golden. And they grinded better than they have all season. By the end of the day, they had amassed a 140 pin lead over second place.
For the JV teams, Junior Nolan Callan not only earned his first ever All-Tournament Team, but with the help of a stellar 299 game, he also earned his first ever collegiate win! Sophomore Quinn Sheehy finished 5th overall for his fourth All-Tournament Team finish.
On Sunday, the varsity team was short one of their coaches as Nick Kruml had tickets for the Packers game. So they were left with just Shawn Wochner for the day. After an average start shooting 758 (175, 212, 156, 215), the team found their groove and followed that up with sets of 984 (221, 235, 252, 276), 913 (232, 274, 216, 191) and 937 (237, 243, 231, 226). This put the Warhawks 392 over just for the day. This also allowed them to expand their lead from 140 pins to winning by 454 pins over Calumet College of St. Joseph.
The JV 2 team also had a stellar weekend as they won the JV division. I believe more impressive than that was the fact that they would have finished 3rd overall. Extremely proud of these guys for their performance. The JV 1 team struggled a bit but managed a 5th place finish among JV teams.
In the bracket, the JV2 team lost their opening round to Midland University JV 2-1.
The varsity team, however, found a little success in bracket play. After losing the opening game to #8 seed Judson University, the team rallied back with games of 225 and 198 to advance to the semi finals. In the semi finals, the Warhawks made quick work of Midland University going 2-0. These were both very close games (235-226 and 222-212) and could have gone either way. Then in the finals, the Warhawks fell just a little short in a high scoring match. Whitewater started strong winning the first game 236-201, but didn't fare as well the next two games as Midland put up scores of 242 and 245 to secure the victory. Whitewater did shoot 208 and 221, which was good enough for a second place bracket finish.
The team will now focus on finals. The varsity team will have a couple of weeks off and then head out to Allentown, PA for a pair of Tier 1 tournaments December 27th - 30th. Check out bowltv.com for all the action live!

Warhawks Advance to Semi Finals
The Leatherneck Classic is the largest and strongest non-major on the college bowling schedule each season. Our Warhawks were in action this weekend competing in this prestigious tournament. The Varsity team had a rough go of qualifying on Saturday, but redeemed themselves with an outstanding day in Bakers on Sunday. The UW-Whitewater varsity team qualified 5th heading into the bracket. Our two JV teams also struggled to get anything rolling at the Leatherneck Classic. JV-1 finished 4th, and qualified for the JV bracket, while the JV-2 team finished 10th out of 18.
In the JV bracket, the Warhawks fell in their opening round with a loss to top seeded Wichita State University - JV-1, 1-2. The Varsity team was able to win their opening round over #4 seed Calumet College of St. Joseph 2-0 before being swept in the semi-finals by McKendree University. McKendree would go on to win the tournament.
The Warhawks have just their home tournament left this fall semester. The team will have three weekends off before getting back to action. Then it will be time to focus up for finals. Looking forward to seeing where this program goes from here!

Warhawks Sweep Five Seasons Classic
This past weekend the Warhawks swept the Five Seasons Classic, hosted by Mount Mercy University. Despite a lackluster qualifying round, the Warhawks climbed from the 4th seed in the bracket to win it all. In the opening round, they defeated top seed and host Mount Mercy University 2-1. Then in the finals, they took on the #2 Seed Lindenwood University and defeated them 2-1 to claim the teams first regular season bracket win.
The JV-1 team was able to take town the top seeded Mount Mercy JV-1 team as well!
The Warhawks will return to the lanes next weekend for the Leatherneck Classic in Moline, IL and Davenport, IA!

Program Earns 40th Win Under Wochner
It was an exciting weekend for the Warhawks. Not only was it Homecoming on campus, but the Warhawks earned their 40th win under Head Coach Shawn Wochner. This time, the win in the Great Lakes Bowling Conference came in a little more convincing fashion, but still not to our fullest potential.
All three teams, once again, finished in the top 3 overall with both Varsity and JV 1 winning their respective divisions. Junior team President Brandon Mooney (hometown hero) lead the field to win his first collegiate win and third ATT of his career. Junior co-captain Alec Karr earned his second ATT as a Warhawk finishing 2nd behind his varsity teammate.
The team will now have two weekends off before heading to the Mustang Invitational in Cedar Rapids, IA the 2nd and 3rd of November. This will be the first time for the Warhawks to attend this tournament.

Top 10 in First Tier 1
This weekend, the Warhawks ventured to Wauwatosa, WI for the Midwest Collegiate Championships, the first of their five Tier 1's this season. This weekend provided many shinning and not so shinning moments. However, as is typically the case, there are always lessons to be learned. The team had a quality team meeting on Saturday night, discussed lane play, mentality and gel factors that lead to the dismal first day performance. Thankfully Sunday proved to be a better day. The team was able to jump up to 7th place, only 100 pins out of 3rd place. So that allowed the guys to walk out with their heads held high. The JV team won their division (of 1) and would have finished 9th over all. This shows great depth in the Warhawk bench, and something that the coaches are certainly taking note of!
Club National Championship Ring Presentation Held
The 2018-19 Warhawks varsity team was honored for their win at the Club National Championships. This tournament was held April 6th and 7th, 2019 at All-Star Bowl in Indianapolis, IN. The University Center put on, in cooperation with their 60th Anniversary, an amazing ring presentation ceremony. The Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin Whitewater was on hand to present our rings, the Interim Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs as well as a slew of additional university administrators. We were very excited to finally receive our rings and are grateful for the amazing ceremony we were honored with. Thank you to everyone who helped to set the event up, pull it off, to those who attended and to those who were thinking about us during this celebration.
As Head Coach Shawn Wochner said during his remarks, "this championship doesn't only belong to the 8 guys and 2 coaches who were there when it was won, it belongs to the full team of 24 players and full coaching staff, to the Warhawks who have come before us to pave the way for this success, to our parents who are our village and which we couldn't do what we do without as well as the University as a whole!".
Thank you again to everyone for the amazing celebration! We look forward to do this again this spring!

Warhawks Win Season Opener
The Warhawks kicked the 2019-20 season off in Bloomington, MN at the first (of four) Great Lakes Bowling Conference tournaments. While this tournament ended up giving the Warhawks their 35th consecutive win in GLBC play (over the past 9 seasons), it certainly didn't happen in traditional Warhawk style.
With the depth in the program, Head Coach Shawn Wochner decided to mix up the teams and split up the program into two completely different varsity teams for the first two GLBC tournaments. Doing this, almost cost the program a win and their streak. With just three baker games to go on Sunday, the varsity team found themselves just 10 pins ahead of UW Milwaukee. Thankfully, the team fought hard and shot 189, 239 and 200 (dutch) the final three games to win by over 100 pins. The two JV teams finished 1st and 2nd within the JV division and all three UW-Whitewater teams finished in the top 3 overall.
Senior Ryan Winters picked up the win and his first All Tournament Team of the season. Sophomore southpaw Zach Sasser finished 2nd overall. And Junior transfer and co-captain Alec Karr finished 5th to earn his first ATT in a Warhawk uniform.

Team Holds First Ever Retreat
With all of the talent and experience the program will have this season, Head Coach Shawn Wochner decided to try something new and do a team retreat prior to the start of the season. The team packed their bags, but not their bowling bags, and headed off to Davenport, IA. There was a full agenda for the weekend, which included fun, learning and team building activities.
The weekend kicked off with a rage room. If you've never done this, you are absolutely missing out. The guys had so much fun breaking stuff, actually destroying stuff. It was just the way this weekend needed to start off. Then Saturday morning, Varsity Assistant Coach Nick Kruml, came in and did a follow up to his Basic Concepts for Advanced Players. This classroom session started off with a knowledge test and then rolled into great conversation on various concepts.
The focus then shifted after lunch to team building and the mental game. Head Coach Shawn Wochner took over the presentation and had the team do a group activity by building a tower our of spaghetti, tape and ultimately a marshmallow. This showed how much communication, trust, respect, leadership and compromise is needed in order to be successful. Then Shawn worked his way through the Mental Performance Certificate training he went through over the summer.
Saturday night, the team did a couple of games of laser tag and had some amazing ice cream. Then on Sunday morning, it was back to the classroom. This day focused on creating a team mission, vision and core values. After this experience, the team is ready to hit the lanes next weekend at the Great Lakes Bowling Conference season opener. Can't wait to see the success that this program has this year!

2019-20 Competitive Team Selected
The five days of tryouts have been concluded. Through 16 games and a bracket, the competitive team for the 2019-20 season has been decided. As Head Coach Shawn Wochner told the 31 student-athletes who tried out, this was going to be the most difficult selection process in his ten years at the helm of the program.
Once all the stats were computed and a bracket was completed, Brandon Mooney emerged as the tryout champion and earned an automatic spot on the competitive team. Here is the full roster of team members selected for the 2019-20 season:
Drake Bazzy
Christian Caban
Nolan Callan
Sean Connelly
Nick DeCesaro
Chad Dempski
David Eggert
Zakarey Geer
Andy Gross
Garrett Haley
Maguire Hansche
Andrew Heritage
Alec Karr
Colten Kersky
Jeffrey Lizewski II
Hunter Loveridge
Tyler McNutt
Brandon Mooney
Mason Peterson
Ty Peterson
Zach Sasser
Quinn Sheehy
Frank Terpo
Donovan Thomas
Ryan Winters
We are very excited to get this season started and see what this kind of depth will be able to accomplish. This could quite possibly be the most physically talented collection of players top to bottom in the history of the program! Only time will tell. And we can't wait!
