Another Top 5 for the Warhawks at the ITC's
And with that, the 2019 Intercollegiate Team Championships have come to an end. Our week kicked off with Junior Ryan Winters competing in the Intercollegiate Singles Championship. He was able to earn a first round bye by finishing 8th in qualifying. Unfortunately he came up short in his second round match losing to the eventual champion, Tom Hankey Jr from Webber International.
Later that evening was the Night of Champions banquet. Senior Josh Pate was able to bring home some hardware. He was named both a National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association Second Team All-American as well as an International Bowling Media Association Collegiate Bowler of the Year Honorable Mention.
It was then time to focus our efforts on chasing the Helmer Cup. Qualifying was quite challenging for us as we had a hard time finding our rhythm. Everyone got play time and was able to contribute throughout. We ended the 24 game seeding round in a tie for 9th place. We “won” the tie breaker. Our reward for “winning” the tie breaker was to be placed on one half of the bracket with the top five ranked teams in the nation, that were at the ITC’s.
And now it was time for match play. Before we started, I told the guys that “nothing before now matters, and the only thing that matters is now”! This mentality helped Thursday afternoon. In the opening round of the bracket we faced off with William Penn. This is a team we see frequently and always have good matches with. This match saw missed opportunities by both teams and came down to the 9th and 10th frames of game 7 to determine the outcome. Sophomore, and first time post season roster member, Brandon Mooney set up Josh Pate (which he did many times throughout match play) to make the necessary shots for us to win the game and match 4-3!
In the second round we faced off with first time ITC participants, Grand Canyon. These guys were riding the ultimate high as they had just sent the #1 qualifiers (and an always favorite at the ITC’s), Wichita State into the contenders bracket. But we were determined to finish the day undefeated and receive a two round bye. We were able to accomplish that by defeating Grand Canyon 4-1.
Friday morning found the Warhawks in the exact same place we’ve been the past two seasons. We faced McKendree in the finals of the winners bracket. We were optimistic that the cliche “third times a charm” would hold true in this match. And boy did we start on fire. We came out swinging while they struggled to get comfortable and find their groove. This allowed us to jump out to a 3-0 lead. But instead of having free swings and no pressure, we pressed to end the match and made some bad shots at in opportune moments. While we were doing that, McKendree proved why they are the defending national champions as they fought back and swept the next four games winning 4-3 and headed to the semi finals. The Bearcats are well coached and are a program we have a ton of respect for. They compete with integrity and win with class.
This loss bumped us down to the contenders bracket. We had about 20 minutes to collect ourselves and find the fight to get back to the semi finals. But to do that, we had to face off with Webber International. This was a match both teams were hungry to win. We gave them everything we had but just made some bad shots and missed some spares that lead to us losing 4.5-2.5. This placed the Warhawks in a tie for 5th place. Webber International went on to win the national championship. Congrats to the Warriors on an amazing run to the ITC national championship!
After the finals, the All-Tournament Team was announced. Senior Josh Pate was named to the ATT! This one is special as it is voted on by the coaches in attendance.
While most programs would leave upset with a 5th place finish, not us. We’ve had amazing success at the ITC’s over the past five years. In fact, there are only two programs (in the men’s field) who have finished 7th or better in each of the past five ITC’s: us and McKendree! We have two 3rd place finishes, two 5th place finishes and a 7th place finish. As a club program who can’t provide athletic scholarships or grants, this just proves that we too are contenders whenever we walk in the door at the ITC’s! Congrats to all of our Warhawks who have been on ITC rosters in the past. This is one heck of a track record!
I would like to say thank you to this years post season roster for all of their hard work, fight and trust this year: Christian Caban, David Eggert, Andrew Heritage, Brandon Mooney, Josh Pate, Josh Schneider, Quinn Sheehy, and Ryan Winters. Also, a special thank you to one of my best friends and assistant coach, Nick Kruml. I appreciate your giving your time to this program. We are truly a great team with your lane play expertise and my mental game knowledge. Together we will get this program an ITC national championship very soon! Thanks again buddy.
Finally I would like to thank all our parents, family members and girlfriends that were with us in Dayton! We appreciate all the support and keeping us fed and hydrated. And thank you to all of our team members, administrators, parents, alumni and fans for their encouragement throughout the week. We greatly appreciate every text, email, comment on Facebook and groupme message.
Grand Rapids, look out. You are our next ITC championship hunting grounds. We’re coming for the cup next April. Be ready for the Warhawks!

CLUB NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!
The Collegiate Club Championships started extremely rocky in the pool play portion of qualifying. The team started with a loss to the vacant team (680 needed to win) and then followed that up with a loss to the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. However, they rallied after that with a win over University of Nevada Las Vegas, California State University Fresno and Arizona State University. This set them up for a rematch with Milwaukee in the position round of pool play. The Warhawks were able to take down the Panthers to secure second place in the pool and a first round bye in the bracket.
The Warhawks first round of the bracket was bowled on Saturday night. The team was able to take down Northern Kentucky University 3-1 in the best of five winners bracket match. Sunday morning the Warhawks returned and took down Wright State University 3-1 and Rochester Institute of Technology 3-1 before heading into the lunch break. After lunch they faced off with, two time defending Club Champions, William Paterson University in the finals of the winners bracket. The Warhawks were able to advance to the finals with a 3-0 win. In the finals, the Warhawks faced off with Wisconsin foe the University of Wisconsin Lacrosse. The Warhawks were able to make quick work of Lacrosse, defeating them 3-0 as they completed their journey to their first ever Collegiate Club Championships victory.
Senior team President Josh Schneider was named the tournaments Most Valuable Player!
The team now has one week left before heading off to Dayton, OH for the Intercollegiate Team Championships.

Club National Awards
Prior to the start of the Collegiate Club Championships, the Club Teams Bowling Coaches Association presented their national awards. The Warhawks had five players named finalists for the Club All-American Awards. These players included:
Andrew Heritage
Josh Pate
Josh Schneider
Quinn Sheehy
Ryan Winters
Senior Co-Captain Josh Pate was named a Club First Team All-American while Junior Ryan Winters was named a Club Second Team All-American. Head Coach, Shawn Wochner, was also named the Co-Coach of the Year. This was a great way to start out the weekend!

Warhawks Advance to Nationals
Sectional weekend started off with the qualifying for the Intercollegiate Singles Championships. All eight rostered team members participated in Smyrna, TN while several other team members participated in Addison, IL. At the end of the qualifying process, Junior Ryan Winters was able to advance by winning the Smyrna, TN sectional.
The focus quickly shifted to the team portion of the weekend. This year was much less stressful than last season. The team was able to his the gas pedal and begin to separate ourselves from fifth place from the very first set on. While it took until the first set after lunch on Sunday to pop a huge number and really create some distance, the team worked extremely well together and at the end of the 64 baker games, we ended up advancing to our sixth consecutive Intercollegiate Team Championships!

Warhawks End Season With Runner-Up Finish at Hoosier
This weekend brought a close to the 2018-19 regular season. The Warhawks competed in the Hoosier Classic in Indianapolis. It was a roller coaster of a weekend. We started strong Saturday, then faltered game 2 but grinded through the rest of the day. Then today, we started hot, faltered the second set again but finished strong. Despite some execution and spare shooting missteps, we managed a 7th place finish in qualifying.
By virtue of qualifying 7th, we advanced to the bracket. In honor of the tournaments 50 year anniversary, they went old school and oiled the lanes with a spray gun and push mop. This provided a unique experience for the guys.
In the opening round, we traded games with SCAD, the #2 seed. We were able to beat this young, talented and well coached team 2-1. In the second round we were able to get past Grand View (#3 seed), another high quality and well coached teams, 2-0 sending us to the finals for the second time in program history. We stood nose to nose with the #1 team in the nation and top tournament seed, Robert Morris. These guys are extremely familiar to us as we see them at evert tournament outside of conference. We got out the gates quick taking the first game. They took games 2 and 3. With a spare in the 10th, we were able to take game 4 forcing a decisive game 5. A couple bad breaks allowed the most talented team in the nation, with one of the smartest coaches in college bowling, to take the title. Given the circumstances (spray oiling and gold pins in final), we will gladly take 2nd place at the Hoosier! Congrats to our friends at Robert Morris!
Now we await our Sectional assignment on Wednesday! I'm looking forward to seeing the team put in the necessary work to achieve our goals this post season. We aren't taking just 8 guys and 2 coaches to post season, we are taking our full Warhawk army! Bring on March!
And congratulations to Andrew Heritage for winning the Friday night Columbia 300 sweeper. And congrats to Josh Pate and Brandon Mooney for also making the cut and cashing!

Award Winning Weekend
The Warhawks end their Great Lakes Bowling Conference season on a high note. For the second conference tournament in a row, the Whitewater teams take the top three spots overall. Varsity won their division while JV2 won the JV division, with the JV1 team right behind them. It was also a great weekend for freshman Zach Sasser as he not only earned his first All Tournament Team finish, he did it in fashion by averaging 232 and winning the tournament!
In the overall conference standings (over four tournaments), the Varsity team won the regular season title by going 38-2 this season. The varsity team won the opening match of the bracket by defeating Winona State 2-0. In the semi-final match, the Warhawks knew the right lane was the better choice and took game 1. The left lane caused some issues which lead to a 1-1 tie with Highland Community College. Then once the Warhawks got back to the right lane, a couple of miscues caused the team to exit the bracket in the semi-finals for the second consecutive year.
In the JV division, the JV 1 team narrowly beat the JV2 team for the top spot in the standings. In the JV finals, the Warhawks beat Highland 3-1 after losing the first game. It was a very exciting final and the second consecutive year that the Warhawks JV team has won the JV Conference Championship!
The Great Lakes Bowling Conference also awarded their end of season awards. Here is a breakdown of the Warhawks awards earned:
Sportsmanship Awards: Ryan Hall and Josh Pate
Second Team All Conference: Chad Dempski, Maguire Hansche and Quinn Sheehy
First Team All Conference: David Eggert, Josh Pate and Ryan Winters
Conference Player of the Year: Ryan Winters
The Warhawks will not prepare for the Hoosier Classic this coming weekend and post season immediately following that! Here's to a great post season!

Conference Sweep
Conference 3 was another rousing success as Varsity won their 31st conference tournament (28th consecutive) and JV1 and 2 finished 1st and 2nd respectively. In the overall results, JV1 was the high pinfall for the tournament, with Varsity right behind them and JV2 finishing 3rd overall! JV1 also shot a 300 game during baker!
Two players earned their first ever All Tournament Team finishes. Chad Dempski (Jr) finished 2nd overall while Maguire "Ninja" Hansche (Fr) finished 3rd overall. Quinn Sheehy (Fr) earned his 3rd ATT of the season while Josh Pate (Sr) earned his 4th of the season and 12th of his career. This actually moves Josh to a tie for 2nd on the All Time ATT list for the Warhawks, tying 2017 alum Zach Woelfel! Former Warhawk Jacob Dunum finished 1st, now bowling for UW-Lacrosse.
The Warhawks will now take a week off and then hit the lanes February 9th and 10th in Freeport, IL as they compete in the Great Lakes Bowling Conference 4 tournament as well as compete for the GLBC Conference Championship!

Spring Starts With Rocky Performance
The first tournament back for the Warhawks in 2019 was a rough one. Despite three practices on Thursday and Friday, the team couldn't muster the performance they were hoping for. Despite a disappointing weekend, a lot was learned and a new motivation has been set for the spring semester. Even in disappointing performances, great things can come about!
East Coast Trip Another Success
The week between Christmas and New Years found the Warhawks out on the east coast for a pair of Tier 1 tournaments. Before getting to the action, the team and some family members spent a day in New York City. We visited Times Square, the Rockefeller Center and the 9-11 Memorial. It was an amazing day!
Then it was time for the team to get to action. The first tournament was the Roto Grip Keystone Quaker Classic. The team turned in a subpar first day of competition. After a team meeting Thursday night, Friday was a much better performance as the team was able to jump from 8th place to 4th place.
The second tournament, the Lehigh Valley Classic, started on Saturday. The performance was better than Friday but still missed 29 makeable spares. Despite that, the team was in first place by just one pin over William Paterson. Another good team meeting was had which resulted in the best performance of the week on the last day of the trip. While the team fell to second place, they had a much better day in terms of shot making, spare shooting and being a team. If this performance can be the worst one we have the rest of the season, I firmly believe we have the makings of a national championship caliber team!
Now for a couple of weeks off before the Tier 1 in Addison, IL on January 19th and 20th.

Kruml Holds Weekend Clinic
Before wrapping up the fall semester, the Warhawk had the opportunity to spend a weekend with alumni, assistant coach and PBA member Nick Kruml. Nick started the clinic on Friday night in Warhawk Alley with the 12 guys who have had varsity experience this fall. They worked on physical game things that needed to be worked on. Then on Saturday morning, he held a classroom session called Basic Concepts for Advanced Bowlers. This interactive session lasted nearly four hours. The guys all walked away with new knowledge that they didn't know that they didn't know. Then the guys hit the lanes again to continue working on physical game attributes. Kruml worked with the rest of the team on physical things as well. And on Sunday, the team participated in some competitions to work on focus and intensity. All in all, the clinic was amazing. Thank you Nick for your time and efforts put into the weekend. Looking forward to seeing the rewards from the clinic!
Fall Semester Wraps Up
The final tournament of the fall semester has come and gone. The Warhawks started the Warhawk Open on fire by shooting 1110, but quickly faltered game 2 before grinding out the rest of the day. After a great 2.5 hour team meeting on Saturday night, the Warhawks rallied back on Sunday posting one of the top baker sets of the tournament. Despite that, the team finished qualifying in 4th place out of 25 varsity teams.
In the bracket, the Warhawks opened with the University of St. Francis (5 seed). The team made good shots and walked away 2-1 in the match. Then in the semi-finals, the Warhawks faced a red hot Iowa Central Community College (8 seed) after taking down the #1 seed Robert Morris. The Warhawks couldn't get much going and had three splits game 2 to fall 0-2 in the match eliminating the team.
On the JV side, both teams made the bracket with JV1 taking down JV2. In the finals, JV1 wasn't able to take care of St. Ambrose JV as they feel 2-1 in the finals. But this marks the third tournament in a row that the Warhawks JV team team has advanced to the championship round!
The Warhawks will now finish up the semester and rest up for our East Coast trip December 25th - 30th and prepare for the spring semester.

Best Weekend To Date
This was by far the best weekend for the Warhawks in terms of execution, team attitude and competition! Thanks to the coaching of Nick Kruml, the guys were able to put together a strong weekend and finish 2nd in a very large and strong field. In fact, the Leatherneck Classic is the largest and strongest Tier 2 field in the nation, and the 3rd largest tournament on the collegiate schedule. Then in the bracket, the team ran into a brick wall named William Penn University. William Penn shot 506 for 2 games to hault the Warhawks quest for their second Leatherneck title!
On the JV side of the river, a strong JV team was able to take the top spot in qualifying. The Warhawks went to face off with Calumet JV in the opening round and defeated them 2-1. The finals wasn't such as easy task as they fell to the #3 seed St. Ambrose University.
Freshman Quinn Sheehy made his second All Tournament Team finish of the season by finishing 3rd at this event. Joining him in the top 25 were: Josh Pate (8th), Christian Caban (9th) and Josh Schneider (21st).
The Warhawks will now have two weekends off before hosting their own Warhawk Open December 1st and 2nd at Stardust Bowl in Addison, IL.

Warhawks Make Early Exit
It was certainly and up and down weekend for the Warhawks. At one point, the varsity team was leading by over 250 pins. But come the end of the day Saturday, the team had fallen into 2nd place. Despite a decent day on Sunday, they weren't able to overcome Robert Morris and remained in 2nd place. In the bracket, the Warhawks ran over UW-Oshkosh in the first round before being blanked by UW-Milwaukee. The momentum and carry was certainly on their side, which propelled them into the finals.
On the JV side, the JV 1 finished 2nd in their division while the JV 2 team was 3rd. In the opening round of the bracket, JV 1defeated JV 2 in the opening round. Then in the finals, against a stacked (2 Junior Team USA members) Robert Morris JV team, they lost by total pins after tying 2.5-2.5 in the best of 5 final.
Earning All Tournament Team honors for the Warhawks was Josh Pate, who finished 2nd overall. Also earning top 25 honors were: Ryan Winters (8th), Andrew Heritage (13th), Zach Sasser (20th), Hunter Loveridge (21st) and David Eggert (25th). Next up for the Warhawks will be the Leatherneck Classic next weekend!

Another Good Conference Tournament
Another Great Lakes Bowling Conference tournament, and another win for the Warhawks! This time it was the Varsity team and JV 2 that walked away with victories. Three more Warhawks earned All Tournament Team honors this weekend: Ryan Winters (1st), Brandon Mooney (2nd), and David Eggert (5th). Also earning top 25 honors were Josh Pate and Nick DeCesaro, who finished 11th and 12th respectively!
Next up for the team will be the Titan Invite the first weekend of November!

Not The Anticipated Weekend
The Midwest Collegiate Championships has always been a hit or miss weekend for the Warhawks, and this year proved to be another miss. Despite a great performance in the baker portion on Sunday, the scoring pace on Saturday proved to be too much for the Warhawks. With 40 varsity teams in the field, the Warhawks managed a 10th place finish. The only two Warhawks to land in the top 50 individually were Josh Schneider (44th) and David Eggert (50th). There is no where to go from here but up! Goal is top 10 at EVERY tournament this season!
Warhawks Get Off To Great Start
The Warhawks kicked off their season this past weekend at the Great Lakes Bowling Conference in Brooklyn Park, MN! All three teams were in action and both the Varsity team and JV 1 took home their respective championship! Leading the way for the Warhawks were: David Eggert (1st), Josh Pate (2nd) and Quinn Sheehy (5th). This weekend hopefully will set the Warhawks up for a successful first Tier 1 next weekend in Wauwatosa, WI!
